Mollymook Beach – a Curtal Sonnet
The day’s close: earthwater, cloudfire
sentinels mark brackish caches, tideline delights.
Shell-weed-pebble helix ribbons laid by lathing
waves. Track the velvet sand dunes higher,
from here, illuminated windlanes like kites
of sky, journey behind the sun’s bathing.
Below me, offerings of seagifts:
broken bird bodies wreathed in kelp, tendon; tight-
faced, horse-toothed leatherjacket swathing
death’s grin, nylon line. Underfoot, dune grass drifts
scathing.
